Over 1 mio Russians to receive maternity capital

More than 1 mio people in Russia will receive the maternity capital in 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said.

She said that over 500K people will receive the maternity capital for giving birth to their first child, and another 500K people will receive it for the birth of their second child. Almost 2.5 mio Russians will receive allowances for children aged 3-7. Overall, the state will allocate RUR 122 bln ($2 bln) for the maternity capital in 2020; this sum will be constantly growing, RBC news agency reports.

At the same time, Yekaterina Shcherbakova, senior research fellow at the Institute of Demography, Higher School of Economics, told Vechernyaya Moskva daily that there is no direct correlation between the maternity capital and the birth rate. She believes that women often have children in the hope to strengthen their marriage. Women often see a child as a symbol of their future life with a man.
