Dr. Andrei Kaprin, the Russian Healthcare Ministry’s chief oncologist, has warned against a number of foods and other factors that increase cancer risks, RIA Novosti reports.

The biggest risk factors for cancer are fatty foods and food additives, including those contained in fast food, as well as excessive quantities of red meat, the expert said, adding that ‘red meat’ includes not only beef and pork, but even chicken legs. Other dangerous factors are alcoholism and obesity, as well as a sedentary lifestyle.

These are the factors that are definitely considered to be carcinogenic,” the scientist told a news conference devoted to the Melanoma Diagnosis Day initiative in Moscow.

He especially emphasized the danger of smoking: it increases cancer risk by up to 50 times, and this is not only about lung cancer.

According to the data he cited, over the past decade, the incidence of cancer has increased by almost a quarter (23.7%), but the mortality rate remained the same. The most frequently detected types are skin cancers (14.4%), mammary glands (11.5%), trachea, bronchi and lungs (10.1%).
