Coronavirus is here to stay — Virologist Anatoly Altstein

Coronavirus is one of the infections that do not go anywhere, and are impossible to eliminate completely, said Anatoly Altstein, a virologist at Gamaleya Center.

According to him, the coronavirus is not like the smallpox that has been successfully eradicated. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been classified as a zoonotic disease found in animals — namely, in bats. The virus will continue to spread from animals to humans. Perhaps one day it will lie low, but then infected animals can efficiently transmit the virus to humans again, Ura.ru quotes the virologist.

Anatoly Altstein says there is no point in trying to eradicate the coronavirus. Smallpox was wiped out because the virus specifically infects humans. Unlike SARS-CoV-2, animals cannot transmit smallpox.

Invest Foresight previously reported that virologists have found an antibody that is universal for use against all coronavirus variants. It can be used to create a ‘super-vaccine’ that will protect us against all strains of the dangerous virus.
