EVRAZ West Siberian Metallurgical Plant to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions

The EVRAZ West Siberian Metallurgical Plant is one of the world’s top 30 steel works (one of the top five in Russia), located in Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo Region. The plant is working on improving the environmental situation and reducing the amount of pollutants in its flue gas.

To that end, a flue gas desulfurization facility will be designed and built; the project is quite expensive: the plant’s own investments will be some RUR 3.5 bln ($47 mio).

The plant uses iron ore, which contains a high amount of sulfur, so it is necessary to create a facility that uses wet scrubbers (they remove dust particles from industrial exhaust streams by capturing them in liquid droplets).

Sulfur dioxide is a standard byproduct. The new desulfurization facility will allow for reducing its amount in flue gases by 70%.
