Logistics points to slowing economy

The transition of consumers to a savings model and a slowdown in the growth rate of retail turnover led to a decrease in the burden on the logistics industry. After a two-year growth cycle, the demand for linear personnel in it, including warehouse workers, decreased by 15% year-on-year. This can slow down the growth of salaries and reduce the attractiveness of the direction for some applicants.

The number of vacancies in the transport and logistics industry, which includes warehouse personnel, in April – May decreased by 15% year-on-year, according to SuperJob and Ozon. This decline is more pronounced than in the Russian labor market as a whole, where the number of vacancies for the year decreased by 11%. According to Headhunter, in April – May, employers published 130 thousand ads on the search for employees in the field of transport, logistics and transportation. Year on year, the indicator decreased by 28%. In the logistics company PEK, they talk about a decrease in the number of vacancies in the warehouse segment and logistics by 5-15% per year, depending on the category.

The current situation shows how the labor market is changing dramatically in industries dependent on consumer demand. Reducing the burden on logistics is just the first signal: if the trend towards a decrease in spending takes hold, companies will have to adapt to new conditions, revising both staff policies and investments in infrastructure, experts warn.

“The slowdown in economic growth (it is impossible to increase the budget impulse endlessly) naturally reduces both the spending of the population and the growth rate of retail turnover. As a result, there is a need for those who serve this retail turnover,” Sergey Khestanov, economist, associate professor of RANEPA, explains.
