Luxury tax will apply to 1,300 cars and SUVs

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has updated its list of vehicles that warrant a higher transport tax to be paid in 2020. The so-called luxury tax is determined by applying multipliers to the standard transport tax.

The list has been significantly extended, with 54 vehicles added in the RUR 3-5 mio ($40K-65K) category, a total of 632 models and their modifications. The RUR 5-10 mio ($65K-$130K) category also grew by 54, to 484 models.

Three more vehicles have been added to the category where the price tag is from RUR10-15mio ($130K-200K); it now includes 100 vehicles. The list of even higher priced vehicles increased by 9, to 82.

For reference, the multipliers are applied to the standard transport tax rate as follows – 1.1 in the first category; 2 in the second; and owners of cars with a price higher than RUR 10 mio will have to pay a triple transport tax.

It is important that the tax is calculated depending on the vehicle’s specific configuration, not just the brand; a basic modification of the same brand can be relatively cheap, and so the increased tax will not apply.
