Innovative Power Unit No. 2 has been launched at Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant II.
The launch is one of the most important events in the Russian nuclear sector. In 2016 the first such power-generating unit was launched at Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant II and the second one at the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant II in 2017.
“A neutron flux of the minimum controlled power level was detected at the reactor that operates at a capacity enough to control fission chain,” Rosenergoatom, Rosatom’s subsidiary in charge of operating Russia’s nuclear power plants, said in a press release.
In other words, the reactor was launched.
“Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant II was built in the 2010s to replace the old Novovoronezh NPP launched in the 1960s. It is a contemporary nuclear power plant and the world’s first plant with a Generation III reactor,” said economist Dmitry Afanasyev. “Despite the development of alternative energy and a nuclear power phase-out in some countries, this industry is still interesting and has good prospects for growth.”
