Russia prepares to test new submarines

Around ten models of submarines are currently deployed by the Russian Northern Fleet.

The submarines can be operated both at northern and southern latitudes. However, according to Northern Fleet commander, admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, old models will be gradually replaced with new submarines and in 15 to 20 years, modernized Borei-class and Yasen-class submarines will account for the largest capacity of the Northern Fleet.

“We expect that eventually, after the trial is finished this year, the Northern Fleet will be reinforced with first representatives of these projects. They are strategic ballistic missile submarine Knyaz Vladimir and multi-purpose cruiser Kazan,” Yevmenov added. Both submarines will operate below the ice of the Arctic Ocean.
