Russia to produce more sugar

Chernyansky Sugar Factory (part of the Rusagro agricultural holding) has launched a molasses desugaring line.

Beet molasses is a side product of sugar production. This dark-colored liquid is widely used in North America as syrup. However, in North America it is produced out of cane while in Russia out of sugar beet. Therefore, Russian molasses is almost inedible due to its unpleasant taste and smell and is used as fodder for farm animals. More sugar is extracted from molasses through desugaring.

The total amount of investment in the project is RUR 5.7 bln ($89.3 mio).

“Rusagro has been launching molasses desugaring lines for a long time,” says food and agricultural market analyst Natalya Chizh. “This allows creating basically zero-waste production, expand the production of sugar and other products.”
