Russians call for extension of lockdown child benefits

As many as 138K Russians have signed a petition asking the government to extend child benefits introduced during the coronavirus lockdown to cover their back-to-school expenses.

Russians say the coronavirus has severely hit their family budgets. In June and July, families with children aged 3 to 16 received state financial support, RUR 10K ($138) per month per child. Now they say they badly need another payment in August because they will have to spend a lot of money on their children’s back-to-school shopping.

The petition was published in early July on the change.org portal, according to PrimPress. The initiators argue that many parents are still unemployed.

Many parents have thanked the President for the lockdown benefits already paid to them. Others criticize the move because it left out families with teenagers aged 16 to 18, although many of them are still in school.
