Sberbank services soon to require biometric data

Sberbank has outperformed the Integrated Biometric System for the amount of collected data. Herman Gref said that his employees collected and processed biometric data of “millions” of Russians.

Since 2019, Sberbank will oblige their customers to submit biometric data. The data will be used to develop the bank’s own identification system, Sber ID. The data from the system will be sold to third parties, TASS reports. After submitting their biometric data, using the bank services will not require personal presence. All that is necessary is to register with the Identification and Authentication System and submit a sample of one’s voice and a special photo.

As Head of Commercial Practice at BMS Law Firm Denis Frolov noted that it is too early to speak about complete halt in serving customers who did not submit their data.

“The innovation will affect new customers. However, there may be some restrictions for current customers as well who may have to submit their biometric data when they apply for new services,” the expert noted.

Denis Frolov said he is confident that those people who simply store their money in the bank will not be affected by the new measure.
