Smart phones sold in Russia to be equipped with Russian search engines

The Federal Anti-Monopoly Service (FAS) determined what Russian software can be pre-installed on smart phones available for sale in Russia. This software includes anti-viruses, search engines and navigators.

Other software permitted for installation includes public services apps and even payment systems. However, payment systems must not be installed in tablets, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports.

FAS representatives supported mandatory pre-installation of designated software on smart phones starting from July 2020. For tablets the requirement will take effect in July 2021, for computers in July 2022 and for Smart TV in July 2023. The agency did not clarify why this step-by-step implementation is necessary.

It is expected that the new rules will expand the usage of Russian software, which will support Russian software developers and protect users’ data.
