UK edtech startup secures $6 million from Russian investors

This story initially appeared in East-West Digital News, an international news resource covering the Russian innovation scene.

MEL Science, a UK online education service with Russian roots which aims to “engage kids into science,” has secured a $6 million round of funding. The deal was reported earlier this month by VC.RU, which cited exchanges with the investors.

The funding came from two international venture funds with Russian roots, TMT Investments and Digital Horizon, which respectively put $2 million on the table. Another $2 million was brought by Yandex, the Russian Internet giant, Phystech Ventures, a fund connected to a famous Moscow science university, and Sistema_VC.

The latter fund is one of the venture vehicles of the Russian conglomerate Sistema. It already invested $4.7 million in total in MEL Science in 2016-17.

Established in 2014, MEL Science offers two products: the “MEL Chemistry subscription box” for “safe experiments delivered to your door monthly,” and the “MEL Chemistry VR Lessons,” which follows a standard K-12 curriculum. The company claims to serve customers in more than 30 countries.
