Smart speakers can be dangerous, Roskachestvo warns

Russia’s independent quality monitoring agency, Roskachestvo, has tested smart speakers. According its representatives, developers still need to seriously modify these devices to make them safe.

Russian quality monitoring experts have evaluated 12 brands of wireless speakers and 5 non-portable ones. It appears that manufacturers mainly focus on improving wireless speakers that can be synchronized with a computer via Wi-Fi. Such speakers can be used outside, which is their advantage, Izvestia writes.

Non-portable speakers have integrated voice assistants, which actually make them “smart.” They can identify the voices of all family members, search for requested data on the internet or be used as an alarm clock. Yet, according to Roskachestvo, such speakers can be unsafe.

For example, we do not know where the user data is stored and who can access it, the experts said. Also, not all virtual assistants can speak Russian.
