Putin launches electric motor production in Chelyabinsk

During a video conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a high voltage motor plant in Chelyabinsk.

The President held a video conference at his Moscow residence together with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. The project is being implemented together with Italian company Nidec, a world leader in industrial power systems.

The Russian side is represented by the large energy company Transneft and KONAR, Russia’s largest manufacturer of flanges (rings of steel designed to connect sections of pipes). The new enterprise was named Russian Electric Motors (REM). The plant’s annual production capacity is projected at up to 300 electric motors with a power range of up to 14 megawatts.

“The new facility will help solving the problem of import substitution of high-voltage electric motors,” economist Dmitry Afanasyev says. “In order to provide the transition to the high-tech economy and nanotechnology we need to at least keep the traditional industrial production alive.”
