Arctic airfields to operate throughout the year

According to Major General Igor Kozhin, Head of the Naval Aviation of the Russian Navy, Russian airfields located in the Arctic will soon be able to operate in any weather throughout the year and will be able to accept all types of aircraft.

The airfields are currently undergoing upgrades. The airfields in question are based at the islands of the Novaya Zemlya, the New Siberian Islands and the Franz Josef Land archipelagos. Infrastructure is being replaced and upgraded using new and approved materials and technologies.

“At one of the airfields, we are implementing an experimental Russian technology. The new surfacing allows restoring runway capacity within a short time and extending its lifetime,” Igor Kozhin noted. He added that the naval aviation is already comfortable with all the Arctic airfields and uses them when flying in the northern latitudes.
