Cisco: Runet traffic to triple by 2022

Over the five years between 2017 and 2022, Russian internet traffic will increase by 220%. By the end of the said period, some 10.8 exabyte of data will be transferred monthly. This is an equivalent of 3 billion DVDs. The figure was quoted in a Cisco internet technology development index report.

Cisco Russia and CIS Technology Director Andrei Kuzmich said that the Russian forecast goes along with global trends. Within the next five years, the amount of internet traffic will significantly grow. This is due to the increasing number of internet users and economy digitalization, which will lead to the increase in the number of internet-connected devices. The demand on ‘heavy’ content and growing capacity of network channels are also playing a role here.

The research states that by 2022, 69% of Russians will become internet users. This figure will remain higher than the global average (the average is 60%). Each Russian will have six internet-connected devices. One fourth of them are smart phones and 10% is smart television.
