Employers will be required to pay fitness tax

Russians will be paid compensations by their employers for attending a gym. The Ministry of Finance has drafted a respective bill the State Duma will begin to review in December.

Russians will be compensated for buying a gym membership through a refund of their personal income tax. The maximum deduction is to be RUR 15.6K (about $250). Experts praise the proposal, but are concerned that gyms will increase their prices once it comes into force, Izvestia daily writes.

Officials have yet to determine which gym services are to be financed by employers. However, it is already clear that getting compensated for attending football matches or ultimate fighting events would not work. Neither will anyone be compensated for buying sports equipment. Some deputies say they are ready to support the bill, so it may be adopted as soon as next summer.
