Europe’s first shrimp farm appears in Crimea

Europe’s first Vannamei shrimp farm has been launched in Crimea.

The farm has already produced 4 mio postlarvae that will be released into special nursery ponds. There will be several releases this year; the farm will produce some 20 mio postlarvae per year at this stage.

The expected capacity of the shrimp hatchery will be at least 400 mio shrimp postlarvae.

Vannamei shrimp are currently bred all over the world except Europe, with China being the largest producer. In Russia, these species is called ‘king prawn’ due to its size: up to 9 cm in length.
