Russia’s sovereign internet law paves the way for a total control system in the digital environment, Kommersant reports.
The new requirement to install domestic software will facilitate the implementation of the Russian digital security certificate. A state center will issue certificates for websites; to make them work, a Russian root certificate will need to be added on each device, the publication notes.
As soon as the state root certificate becomes mandatory, it will provide a highly efficient technology solution for tracking people, says economist Sergei Khestanov, associate professor at RANEPA. Moreover, a large array of personalized data is an ideal object for applying modern big data analysis methods.
“From a commercial perspective (and wider non-security-related applications), this data would greatly benefit bankers, auto dealers and real estate agencies, and market researchers, too,” the expert said. The development of internet services in Russia is more and more clearly progressing in China’s path. This situation seems predetermined by the development of a new bipolar configuration between the US and China.”
