Greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere reached record levels in 2018 and continue to increase, Chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Rae Kwon Chung told a news conference at the TASS news agency on Tuesday, October 1.

By 2020, the amount of greenhouse gases will break all records again, but might begin to decline slightly after that, Rae Kwon Chung said citing forecasts made by the UN Commission on Climate Change.

“Climate change is happening faster than we expected. To address it, renewable energies must be developed. Unfortunately, today we can see the opposite situation: subsidies for the development of fossil energy significantly exceed subsidies for alternative types of energy. Only $100 bln is allocated for renewable energy annually, and this is not enough,” the expert noted.

Up to $2.3 trln must be spent annually on the development of alternative energy sources; this way serious results can be achieved, he emphasized.
