Hackers come up with new data theft scheme

Hackers are now using a new method to steal users’ personal data. They are taking screenshots of users’ monitors and upload the data on the DarkNet.

Most personal data is stolen from banks and mobile companies rather than directly from users, Izvestia reports. Banks have already expressed concerns with leaks while their top managers promised to do everything to prevent data drain. Ten percent of personal information on the DarkNet is published as screenshots. In 2018 this data theft method was rarely used but in early 2019 there was a dramatic surge in such crimes. Analysts reviewed 800 documents available on the DarkNet and concluded that one can buy personal data of tens of millions of Russians online.

Apparently, 80% of the data was retrieved from various corporate information systems and downloaded on external storage devices while another 10% was obtained otherwise.

The DarkNet is a hidden network that can only be accessed via special VPNs. It is believed that the network contains large amounts of illegal data.
