Mechel to invest RUR 4 bln in coal terminal upgrade

Stevedores involved in loading and unloading cargo ships in the Primorye Territory are launching new coal yard sprinkler systems. The project is being implemented by the company Commercial Port of Posyet, which operates in the territory’s Khasansky District and is part of Russia’s major mining and metals company Mechel.

The systems are designed to protect ports from coal dust. The work, in particular, will include modernizing the industrial and fire protection water supply system, which will further provide a smooth work of dust control devices. The system will deliver clear water to the stationary coal dust suppression sprinkler facility, which will automatically spray water along the perimeter of the coal storage yards.

The company will invest over RUR 4 bln ($60 mio) in upgrading the terminal.

Mechel became notoriously recognized across the globe after Vladimir Putin threatened to send a doctor to its director, Igor Zyuzin. Putin accused Mechel of selling its coking coal abroad at half the price paid in the domestic market, which could be a possible sign of tax evasion“, economist Dmitry Afanasyev notes. “Yet, everything worked out all right and the company is even modernizing its production now, which is good news“, he says.
