Mortgagors almost never get divorced and their marriages are much stronger than marriages of other Russians. Only 2% families with mortgages file for a divorce while 20% of other families get divorced.

The research was conducted by the Equifax credit bureau and the National Association of Professional Debt Collection Agencies. The analysts found that loans are usually taken out by families with strong relationships. Before taking out a mortgage people assess potential litigation risks, which is another reason for a small number of divorces, RIA Novosti reports.

Getting divorced is much easier for people without a mortgage because they are less likely to be involved in related legal battles. According to the Central Bank, over the first six months of the year Russians took out 575,000 mortgages worth a total of RUR 1.25 trl ($19.2 bln).
