In the 21st century, Russian military will be using combat laser systems that earlier featured only in science fiction. The news was announced by President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on the development of the Russian Aerospace Forces, TASS reports.
“These are the types of weapons that will largely shape the combat capability of the Russian Army and Navy in the next decades,” the President said. “The types of weapons that were just recently seen only in science fiction.”
Putin stressed that under some circumstances this type of weapons may be utilized for civilian purposes “in certain regions” – for example, for mining operations in the Arctic.
Last year, after the Russian military tested the Peresvet combat laser systems, the Russian President announced that the new Russian weapons will multiply the potential of the armed forces and help to ensure stability on the entire planet.
