Russia to build a new, secured internet

Data breaches, including the leakage of information that is critical for users and companies, are one of the biggest problems of the contemporary internet. The launch of a new quantum internet currently under development by Russian scientists will allow for protecting ourselves from this threat.

The development of the platform for ‘the internet of the future’ has begun by ITMO National Research University in partnership with the Russian Venture Company, Izvestia daily reports. The pilot launch is planned for 2021, with the Russian Railways infrastructure to be used for the project.

The quantum communications platform will include hardware and software that will form the key center for quantum networks. The new secured solution will be useful to, first of all, financial organizations for which the issue of data protection is a key priority, as well as production facilities that regularly suffer from hacker attacks.

Interestingly, the new platform will provide the opportunity to build networks for transmitting information, from local ones for a concrete enterprise, to country-level networks. That is, a huge number of users will be able to use the new quantum internet.

As for investment, the university received a grant worth RUR 300 mio ($4 mio) as a leading research center as part of the Russian Digital Economy national program.
