Russians will be required to use domestic software on smartphones

Russians will be required to use only domestic software on smartphones, computers and Smart TVs. Retailers will not be allowed to sell these products without pre-installed Russian apps.

The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill requiring retailers to preinstall Russian software on smartphones. If the bill is passed, smartphones and computers without domestic software will no longer be sold in Russia, Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes. The government has already approved the bill in a bid to support Russian software developers. It is also expected to protect Russians from spyware allegedly installed by foreign manufacturers.

There is no list of specific apps that will be installed on smartphones yet. However, it is going to be compiled by next summer when the bill can come into force.
