State Duma will not consider GPS trackers spying devices

The State Duma passed a package of bills that specify which devices are considered spying technology. GPS trackers were excluded from the list.

The issue of clarifying legislation was raised during a Direct Line with the Russian President by a farmer who complained that he was being sued for buying a GPS tracker to track his cows’ movements.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that it is absurd to penalize people for using GPS trackers and camera goggles.

According to the newly passed documents, spying equipment includes devices specifically developed for obtaining information discretely without its owner’s knowledge, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. Therefore, spying devices do not include devices that can record sound and video as well as geolocators because their recording functions are openly controlled.
