Terrorists lose interest in cryptocurrencies

Criminals are losing interest in cryptocurrencies because they do not provide complete anonymity and are controlled by regulators. Terrorists no longer trust popular cryptocurrencies but are also reluctant to use the new ones due to their unreliability and illiquidity.

According to a survey by the International Security and Defense Policy (ISDP) Center of the RAND Corporation, such terrorist organizations as Al-Qaeda and ISIS (both organizations are banned in Russia, – Ed.) are no longer interested in cryptocurrencies. Criminal groups engaged in drug and human trafficking also lost their interest in cryptocurrencies because the anonymity of all market transactions in major cryptocurrencies is minimized, according to Kommersant daily. Less popular cryptocurrencies, such as Monero and Zcash, remain anonymous but have other features that are not appealing to criminals.

At the same time, the survey authors note that the digital market potential for providng undisclosed operations must not be underestimated. The criminal market might go out of control of law enforcement agencies due to the rapid advancement of technology.
