Germany’s GIZ launches pilot project in Voronezh

Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources, the Voronezh Region Government and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) have signed a cooperation agreement for the project “Climatically Neutral Waste Management in the Russian Federation.”

The Voronezh Region was chosen as a pilot region to apply the German company’s international practice of solid municipal waste management. Under the agreement, GIZ will analyze the local waste management system with its own funds and give recommendations on how to adjust it, as well as offer solutions for sparsely populated (rural) areas.

The company agreed to provide expert and methodological assistance in the development of the regulatory framework in the pilot region, to organize experience exchanges, advanced training, awareness events, information support and extending the results to other Russian regions.

The concept of climate-neutral waste management is based on the closed-cycle economy principle, where waste is not simply stored but recycled and reinvested into the national economy as raw materials.
