An abnormally warm winter in Russia could result in a diminishing population of mosquitoes.
According to Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Water Problems Institute, warm climate snatches insects out of hibernation but they die due to a lack of food. This may also break other links in the food chain because mosquito larvae are a substantial part of hatchlings’ and tadpoles’ diet. Litter will reduce and then it may affect the spawning stock of fish in about 6 to 12 months.
Warm weather in Moscow has already caused butterflies and lady bugs to wake up. Ticks may also become active early.
