The Russian Quality System (Roskachestvo), a national system for monitoring, comparative testing and quality verification of goods and services, has warned Russians to be on their guard when using street ATMs. Experts believe that using them is dangerous due to a large number of frauds.

Roskachetsvo experts said that criminals often install fake card readers that copy PINs. The good news is that users can spot such devices themselves: they have a different color than the ATM and are not attached firmly to the machine.

Only in rare cases fraudsters install fake readers on cash machines that are located inside bank offices because of surveillance cameras and numerous bank workers, Lenta.ru publication reports.

If the client realized the ATM has been tampered with after they withdrew the money, they should call the bank and ask them to block the card. Another advice is to always shield the keypad with your free hand to avoid anyone seeing you enter your PIN.
