The world’s data hits 2 trillion gigabytes

The volume of data created in the world has amounted to 2 trillion gigabytes, enough to fill a stack of CDs that would stretch for a distance four times the distance from Earth to the moon, director of the Institute for Internet Development autonomous non-commercial organization Sergei Petrov said addressing the Cyber Security Forum 2019 at Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.

“Human intellect is unable to assess all changes that have taken place in the digital era. This age is most notable for massive amounts of data the mankind has created. As for 2018, the total amount was 2 zettabytes, or 2 trillion gigabytes. As the result, today 5 billion people interact with data this or the other way”, Sergei Petrov said.

He expressed an opinion that by 2025, 20% of the data in the global system will be of critical importance.

“By then, 10% of the data will have supercritical importance, with people’s lives and security as well as the international situation depending on it”, the expert noted.

According to him, today a considerable amount of data is stored in the Russian language.

“Russian has become the second most frequently used language in the Internet after English. 76% of Russians use the Internet, which is a positive trend; the problem is that not all Russian citizens have the ability to question information found on the web – this resulted in a 32%-growth in fake news created in 2018, according to Russia’s Medialogia media monitoring system”, Petrov emphasized.

In conclusion, Petrov noted that new digital technologies will greatly affect the labor market in the future. “Upon becoming students, 60% of today’s first-graders will be learning skills and professions that people have not even heard of”, the expert said.
