Vehicles to get energy-saving stickers

In less than two weeks, on March 31, 2020, a new national standard is taking effect under which new vehicles released from a plant will be accompanied with one more supporting document.

In addition to a motor vehicle certificate, a manual and a service book, cars will be provided with an energy-efficiency sticker.

We should not be expecting a price increase due to extra paperwork (there have been enough price hikes already this year). However, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry addressed these concerns back in late 2019. In its comments for TASS, the ministry said that energy-efficiency certification will not lead to a price growth in the car market. So what will this sticker be like?

The sticker will show fuel or electricity (for electric cars) consumption rate. Under the new national standard, all cars will be classified from A to G, with three sub-categories A++, A+ and B+, depending on the consumption per 100 km and the amount of carbon emissions.

As concerns electric cars, the sticker will show the drive range with full batteries and how much energy a vehicle requires to get a full charge.

It is expected that the sticker will not only motivate car manufacturers to produce environmentally cleaner cars and thus improve their reputation in the market but will also be a certain extra (moral) bonus with the purchase.

The energy-saving sticker itself will be issued by manufacturers voluntarily and only for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons. Limited edition models and specialized series (up to 2K vehicles in a series per year) will not be subject to the rule.
