Additive technologies cured almost 900 patients in Russia

Doctors are currently following up on 900 patients who have been treated for the past three years using additive technologies. These technologies can significantly reduce the cost of treatment of tumors.

In the near future, the Association of 3D printing in medicine will issue clinical guidelines on how to use individual medical devices created using 3D printing technology. According to Rector of the Volga Research Medical University Nikolai Karyakin, the use of 3D printing in medicine is not regulated in Russia today.

“Hospitals create their own products using 3D printing. The law only describes how to use products that have registration certificates,” the expert said.

According to him, Russia has a legal vacuum in this area. Most 3D-printed medical devices are used by dentists and orthopedists. The total revenue from the use of such products worldwide exceeded $650 mio last year. In Russia, 877 patients were treated with additive 3D printing technology in 2016–2018.
