A Gazprom delegation headed by its Chairman Alexey Miller paid a working visit to China, corporate website reports.

In Beijing, Miller was received by Wang Yilin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CNPC. The parties reviewed a wide range of cooperation issues, focusing on the ongoing preparations for the start of gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline.

As Miller noted after the negotiations, “Construction of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline is progressing ahead of schedule, and Gazprom will start delivering gas to China well in advance, as early as December 1, 2019.”

In 2014, Gazprom and CNPC signed a 30-year Sales and Purchase Agreement for supply of Russian gas via the eastern route (Power of Siberia gas pipeline). The document provides for annual deliveries of 38 bln cubic meters of gas to China.

In 2018 China became the world’s largest natural gas importer with its imports totaling 125.7 bln cubic meters, a 31% increase against 2017. The growth was primarily due to liquefied natural gas supplies, since China is currently unable to meet its rising gas demand by means of the existing pipelines.
