Mushroom farming launched in Penza Region

One of Russia’s largest facilities for industrial cultivation of champignons has opened in Serdobsk, Penza Region.

The opening ceremony was attended by Penza Region governor Ivan Belozertsev.

“The opening of this plant is a big event. We are glad that quality product will be offered to consumers in the Penza Region and other regions of Russia,” the governor said.

The plant is located at the Serdobsky industrial park. The project is being implemented by Gribnaya Kompania. The plant’s annual capacity will be 5K tons, which is 7% of the country’s demand. The project received some RUR 2 bln ($31 mio) in investment.

“The production of champignons, pearl oyster mushrooms and other cultivated mushrooms is developing rapidly in Russia, and is nearing import substitution,” said Natalia Chizh, an expert in the agrarian and food markets. “The domestic production is currently surpassing the imports, especially given the presence of personal farms that also cultivate champignons.”
