Russians change their purchasing habits

Russian citizens currently choose to go grocery shopping less often but make more purchases at a time, specialists at the Rabota.ru job search service and the Platforma OFD fiscal data operator said.

According to experts, the current COVID-19 pandemic has changed citizens’ habits and consumer behavior in particular, with people choosing to go to grocery stores less often and buying a greater amount of products at a time.

During this year’s second quarter, the average check at grocery stores increased by 28% to RUR 488 ($7). At local convenience stores, it also grew by 19% to RUR 357 as compared to the same period last year.

The growth is due to lockdown measures, with Russian citizens avoiding leaving home except for very limited purposes, the Prime business news agency reported. The most common purchases included grains, meat, vegetables, tea, and beer.
