Siberian scientists receive RUR 1 bln to build synchrotron

The Siberian Circular Photon Source shared knowledge center (SKIF) has received its first investments of RUR 1 bln ($16 mio) to build a synchrotron.

The SKIF synchrotron will allow scientists to study the matter on the atomic level with a great accuracy, which is necessary in such areas as biology, medicine, chemistry and others. In addition, it will help to create new materials for the Russian defense industry.

The project is being implemented in Novosibirsk in accordance with a relevant instruction by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He gave these instructions two years ago following a meeting with experts from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The total amount of investment in the project will exceed RUR 37 bln ($580 mio). The first stage of the project will be launched in 2024.

The SKIF is a megascience research installation: the term ‘megascience’ was used for a range of unique scientific complexes by the Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Science national project. In addition, this is the largest such infrastructure project that belongs to this national project.
